I LOVE the lighting in this pic! This is right after my Crossfit workout today!
I'm really big on a healthy lifestyle.
Everything from diet to exercise has been a HUGE part of my life for as long as I can remember.
For the majority of my career as Marine, long distance running was my passion.
On my first deployment to Japan, I think I was running an average of 6-10 miles a day, 6 days a week.
And one the 7th day?
I didn't rest like I should have.
My butt was in the gym.
In hindsight, I was over doing it because that was when all my knee and hip problems started.
I saw an orthopedic surgeon along with every other specialist in the military before I just said, "screw it."
I didn't want to be put on limited duty, and I didn't want to be non deployable.
I "sucked up" all my injuries, and continued to deploy....and run (I was the crazy girl running in 130 degree weather in Iraq!).
I would run through the pain, and by mile 3 or 4 (or 5), everything would just go numb.
That gave me the false sense of "everything's ok", and I thought my injuries had miraculously healed.
My injuries got worse, and I forced myself to be seen.
That's when I was told I had all kinds of tears and issues in my knees and hips.
I was too young in my career to continue service, and I was medically discharged with disability just 6 months shy of my actual EAS (end of active service).
Fast forward to today (almost 10 months later), and I still have the same issues I left the Marine Corps with.
While running a marathon isn't in my near future (never say never, right?), I've found ways to modify work outs to work with my injuries.
I can still run long distances, but it takes me a lot longer to recover.
My days of going on a run every day are long gone.
But...
Crossfit has always been a part of my work outs for about 4 years now.
Spinning has become a saving grace for me to make up for all the days I can't hit the pavement.
Most importantly, a healthy diet.
I haven't let pregnancy stop me either from working out!
At my very first pregnancy appointment, the first question out of my mouth was, "Am I cleared to work out?!?"
I am EXTREMELY thankful that God has given me such a healthy pregnancy to allow me to continue to work out throughout my pregnancy.
I make sure to take at least 45 minutes out of my day to get some sort of work out in.
I've become a huge fan of Crossfit Mom for my WODs (crossfit lingo).
I also own my own spin bike, and on days I'm not feeling up to a WOD, I jump on the bike and spin for 45 minutes.
I don't lift heavy since my center of gravity is all off, but that doesn't mean I don't lift!
Up until just a few weeks ago, I was running 4 1/2 miles on the treadmill once a week.
I can't run so much anymore since the baby is sitting so low.
All the bouncing up and down when running makes me have to use the bathroom every 5 minutes!
And lastly...
Diet is essential!!
Hubby and I rarely eat red meat, and for the most part we stay away from refined carbs.
We sometimes eat paleo, but I haven't fully committed 100%.
One of my favorite things to eat right now is "mashed cauliflower".
It has almost the same consistency as mashed potatoes, but without all the starchiness and carbs!
I am also a big fan of healthy wraps.
We had this wrap last night!
It's quinoa (tossed with a little pesto), garlic chicken, avocado (mashed with lime, garlic, and salt), topped with fresh goat cheese, and wrapped in a low carb whole wheat tortilla.
We had a side of grilled zucchini and squash (brushed with olive oil, garlic, and salt/pepper).
So filling and so delish.
I do have HORRIBLE pregnancy cravings, and I don't let myself give into every single one (trust me...it takes a TON of will power)!
But, as you know by my cheesecake post, I do let myself indulge every once in a while!
I'm a strong believer that you can't just cut EVERYTHING "sinful" out of your diet!
Just do it in moderation!!
Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!
Stay fit.
Stay active.
And have FUN!
A wonderful accomplishment to share. I struggle to stay active and eat healthy when I don't have an excuse of 'eating for two' and pregnancy cravings'. I wish I had more will power especially as I get older and need to think more of being healthy. Please keep sharing the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope I can motivate someone to stay active and healthy!
DeleteGood for you. There are two pregnant ladies in my zumba class and honestly, I don't know how they did it. They take it down a bit, but I don't think I could have handled it when I was pregnant. They are both very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! It just takes a little motivation! For me, working out is my stress reliever!
DeleteThat is such a gorgeous picture.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI just found out that I'm expecting and I cut WAAAAYYY back on my working out....I'm just never sure what's too much! Good motivation for me to kick it up a little!

Ask your doctor! I made sure I told him the intensity of my work outs and what types of work outs I did. He have me the thumbs up or down on different work outs. A lot of the crossfitmom stuff requires heavy lifting, so he had me cut down on the weights!
