My Struggles with Eating Disorders & Mental Health

I'm usually a pretty open book when it comes to my life. I've shared a lot of my life on this blog in hopes that maybe it'll help someone else that is going through something similar. Every once in a while, I'll share on Instagram about some of my past struggles with an eating disorder and body dysmorphia. Those posts usually are reflective for me. After a good work out, I look in the mirror and am amazed at how far God has brought me, and I feel convicted to share.

I started my period today, and felt crappy. My body craves carbs and sugar the day before my period (two things that I rarely ever crave/eat), and yesterday, I gave into those cravings. I had an entire roll of sweet tarts (I ALWAYS crave a sour, fruity candy before my period), and before bed I ate WAY too many pretzels (hello sodium and carbs). I woke up bloated, and kicking myself in the butt for going a little crazy with my cravings. I headed to the gym like I always do after dropping off my kids, and I felt ten times better after my work out. I didn't feel guilty anymore about eating bad yesterday, and was just grateful to be in a place where a simple work out could make me feel this way.

It wasn't always like this for me.

I am a first generation American. My parents immigrated here in late 70's from South Korea, and I was born in Houston, TX. I grew up in a traditional Korean home. Korean women tend to be teeny tiny. I did not inherit the "Korean girl gene". I'm not a big person by any means, but compared to the "average" Korean girl, I'm considered "big". I was reminded of that my whole life...by my mom, my grandma, my aunts...At family gatherings, women would pinch my arms, stomach, and legs and ask "how much weight have you gained? You look fat." In fact, my sweet grandma (whom I love) told me I was getting too fat. I WAS 20 SOMETHING WEEKS PREGNANT WITH DANNIKA! I know you Americans reading this are probably HORRIFIED at this. My husband was when I first told him. But here's the thing...these snide remarks were not meant to be malicious in any way. I know it's hard to believe, but it came from a place of love. It's a cultural thing, and Koreans tend to be pretty up front and blunt if they feel comfortable around you. I believe the Latin culture is very similar. This could be a WHOLE another post, and there are actual, peer reviewed sociological studies done about this subject, but I won't bore you.

Growing up being told you're getting fat your whole life does WONDERS for a girl's self esteem. Let me tell ya.
I remember the first time I made myself throw up.
I think I was 16 or 17. I ate 2 corn dogs, and felt SO guilty about it. My parents were at work, and I was home alone. I remember going to my kitchen and trying to puke into the sink using a chop stick (we're Korean, remember? we had lots of chopsticks). That didn't work, so I ditched the chopstick and shoved my fingers down my throat and made myself throw up. It was disgusting, and I felt worse afterwards. I turned the faucet on, and let the garbage disposal do its' job.

I joined the Marine Corps after high school with a plethora of emotional baggage. That's for another post as well. As a Marine, physical fitness is a big part of "our job".  I used that as an excuse to make exercise a priority in my life. That priority became an unhealthy addiction. I was later diagnosed with OCD. I became obsessed with running. All my miles had to be even numbers. On the treadmill, if I ran 6.1 miles by accident, I'd run another 1.9 miles to make it an even 8. Even the calories on the machine had to end in a 0 for me. 602 calories? Nope. Gotta to get 8 more calories to make it an even 610. For those who truly know what OCD is, people who are ACTUALLY diagnosed with it have control issues. My life was out of control, so I tried to control every aspect of my life that I could physically control, and exercise was it. Also,
it really annoys me when people who aren't medically diagnosed with OCD are constantly talking about how "OCD" they are.
You're not OCD. You're just a neat freak, Karen. (*insert eye roll)

This post is super long already, but for pretty much the rest of my time in the Marine Corps I struggled with this. I was officially diagnosed by a mental health professional with OCD, anxiety, depression, body dysmorphic disorder, and panic attacks, It had all caught up to me and came crashing down (because it ALWAYS does). I was bulimic, addicted to exercise (cardio), counted calories obsessively, obsessed about how much food and what kind of food I ate, and was addicted to diet pills and laxatives (one particular brand that has been banned and outlawed because people were literally dying of heart attacks). After my first child was born, Nick deployed to Afghanistan. I spent that entire 7 months losing the "baby weight". I still remember when Nick first saw me after 7 months at his homecoming. He was shocked. Not at how "good" I looked, but shocked at how thin I was. To this day, Nick says that I was "too skinny", and thought I looked like a "bobble head".
I actually LOVE this photo.
I have it blown up and framed in my house.
This was our first hug in 7 months, and that is the greatest feeling in the world.
But I also cringe a little.
I was so tiny, and taking dangerous diet pills...I was not healthy.

*************************************

I once had a friend comment on this photo, "you look so good! I hope I look like that after I have kids!"
I cringe at that comment.
I do not look good.
I was unhealthy, starving, and still thought I was fat.

************************************

This was a vacation Nick and I took to the Dominican Republic after he came home from Afghanistan.
I remember posting photos after our vacation, and not wanting to post this one, because I felt like my stomach was protruding.
Body dysmorphia.
I look at this photo now, and can't believe that I actually thought that.

I still struggle with body image every once in a while. There are days (like this morning) when I wake up bloated and feeling bad. I don't want to look at myself in the mirror, and just want the day to end. I think that's normal. But I'm at a place where when I start thinking negatively about myself, I can recognize it. I usually do something for "me" on those days. "Treat yo'self".

Here's my very proud "post gym selfie" today.
I am no longer a "cardio bunny".
I lift weights, and that has been a GAME CHANGER.
I'm really proud of my little trap muscles and my arms.
I have better calves than my husband (my bad, Nick!).
I don't have a 6 pack or a 4 pack.
In fact, I am pretty sure it is genetically impossible for me.
My little sister had a C-section, and her doctor told her that she didn't have a lot of muscle tissue in her abs.
I'm assuming I share those genes with her (maybe?).
I don't stress about my food.
I eat clean most days.
I stay away from foods with bad ingredients....
And I enjoy all the wine when I want it (cheers!)

I also have to say that once I started a path to a healthier me, I chose to become baptized that year! My physical health and spiritual health were two things I had to work on simultaneously. I spent my early 20's so angry at God, and blamed Him for everything that had happened to me. It wasn't until I hit that low point that I found myself begging for God's grace. I had to relive and revisit some things that had happened to me in my past in order to heal, but it is the most freeing feeling to just put it all at the feet of Jesus!

If you're struggling with any of the things I've written about it here, the first advice I have for you is to go see a counselor! There is no shame in that, and talking to a professional is something that really helped me. If you've made it this far into my blog post, I appreciate it. This is pretty vulnerable (even for me), so it means a lot! Hope everyone is having a great week so far, and you can always connect with me on Instagram @SemperAg_blog

Living with Degenerative Joint Disease

It's been a while since I've blogged about my knee problem (s).
When I was discharged from the Marine Corps, I was deemed 60% disabled.
I was diagnosed with degenerative joint disease (AKA osteoarthritis) of my right knee.
It is most common in women over 45.

I thought I'd blog about my journey with this debilitating ailment up until this point in my life.

I've had this since I was 26ish and it's progressively gotten worse over the years....
No one said the Marine Corps would be easy on your body, and it definitely did its' number on my knees....
And I'm not even a grunt...I can't imagine those guys bodies!

I had Synvisc injections which is an injectable medication called hyaluronan.
Synvisc is typically administered as a series of three injections into the knee joint, each injection spaced about one week apart.
Synvisc has been shown to help alleviate arthritis symptoms for 6 months, and to delay the need for knee replacement surgery.
Unfortunately for me, I had a HORRIBLE allergic type reaction to Synvisc, was hospitalized, and had to have my knee drained several times to alleviate the amount of swelling I had.
My doctor was stunned when he saw how big my knee had gotten!

I had an arthroscopic surgery prior to getting out of the Corps.
The ortho surgeon was hoping that I had enough cartilage in my knee to where she could shave it down to make it smoother, so it would hurt less.
When I woke up from anesthesia, I could see the look of disappointment on her face.
She told me that I did not have enough cartilage in my knee left that she could work with.
So my knees are clearly "out aging" the rest of my body (thank you Marine Corps!).

So people always say things to me like, "It can't be THAT bad if you're working out every day, and running!"
To those people...
I want to punch in the face.

Actually, I'm in a constant state of pain every single day.
Parts of my day (like right after my work out), I'm in excruciating pain.
Some days, when I get out of bed, I can't even bend my right knee and am forced to walk around stiff legged for a few minutes before the fluid in my joints allow my knee to bend.
And even then...it takes another few minutes for my knee to bed to a full 90 degree angle.
Don't ever ask me to sit on my knees, cause sitting on my knees is like sitting on a bed of hot nails.
I'm a girly girl, and I love my heels, but I don't wear them nearly as often as I would like because frankly, after a day of walking around in a heel, my knee is usually swollen to the size of a tennis ball.

But I smile, put on my happy face, and work out every day.
Why?
Because my knee hurts, but just because my knee hurts does not give me an excuse to let my health go down the drain.
No, I can't go for a 10 mile run like I used to for fun, but I have revamped my work out style to accommodate my old ass knees.
It's not perfect, and my knees still hurt afterwards, but it's not nearly as bad as running.
I still run (against the wishes of my doctors) because running has always been my "go to" stress reliever.

I deal with the pain because taking care of the rest of my body is important.
I already have bad knees...
I don't need the rest of my body following them.
So to those of you sitting at home making excuses for yourself on why you can't carve out an hour, 30 minutes, or even 20 minutes out of your day to get up and move, I don't know what to tell ya.

I'm a full time mom of two very busy kids, a full time college student, a wife...
My life is hectic, but I find time to make time for my health.

Put on a smile, and suck it up!

Any of you dealing with any chronic ailments?

Motherhood Is...

Motherhood is...
Going to Target on a whim at 7:30 in the evening, because you realized that the next day was "Silly Socks and Sunglasses Day" at school...
And your daughter can't find her sunglasses OR any silly socks.

Yes, that happened last night.
Good thing I only had one glass of wine before I realized it.
Luckily, all the college students have left town since finals are over, and there was no traffic.
Even better, no one AT Target.

#thankstarget
#targetdoesitagain

Here she is for her fun day!

I think I actually want a pair like this for myself...

Motherhood is...
Taking 'selfies' with a baby on your hip (and a photobombing baby daddy)...
Motherhood is...
Testing out your daughter's new scooter before she rides it home from school...
You know...
Just to make sure it's "safe".

Side note...
Have y'all seen the new Starbucks "mini" sized Frapuccinos?!
They are so little, and so cute, and so perfect, and so ME!
I can never finish an entire regular "tall" sized anything from Starbucks, so this size is perfect!
As a super health conscious and self proclaimed "fitness freak", I also have a problem with America's obsession with gigantic portion sizes with everything.
So this definitely made me smile :)
Did you know...
This "new" mini size at Starbucks is not actually "new"?!
This is actually a "tall" in Japan.
When I was deployed to Japan, I remember ordering a tall Frapuccino, and being baffled at how little it was compared to my normal "American" frap.
After 7 months in Japan, when I came home and ordered a tall frap in America, it felt like I had ordered a big gulp!
Japan doesn't have an obesity epidemic....

Anyway...
Happy Tuesday, y'all!

Kindergarten Petri Dish

I hate Kindergarteners.
Ok, Ok, I don't HATE hate Kindergarteners, but I hate Kindergarteners.
Did that make any sense? No, probably not.
Let me elaborate.

Our family rarely gets sick.
I like to think we have some iron steel immune systems.
However, ever since Dannika started Kindergarten, our whole family has been non stop sick since October.
A cold here, a cold there, a fever here, a fever there, stomach flu (x2 for my husband in the same month)....
Literally....every month since October SOMEONE has been sick.
I finally came to the conclusion that it is Kindergarten.
Dannika is always the first to get sick, and because we're a family and are forced to live together, whatever disease she picked up from Kindergarten makes it around the family.
I feel like we just keep passing back and forth the same disease, and Dannika takes it back to school, gets another kid sick (unintentionally), and then that kid comes back to school and gets Dannika sick, who then brings it home and gets us all sick....
It's a vicious cycle.
I also believe that Kindergarten teachers have some crazy super human immune systems.
They basically go to work in a petri dish every day.
Have you BEEN to a Kindergarten classroom recently?!?
All those cute and adorable kids are germ infested.
Lord knows they don't all wash their hands, and some of them don't know how to wipe their butts properly, so there's fecal matter...everywhere....(this is what I envision at least).
I see kids picking their noses, then hugging each other (makes me cringe every time)...
They share glue sticks, crayons, markers with their germ infested hands...
Kindergarteners are gross, germ infested little human beings!
No wonder we have been non stop sick!

I got it the worst this week than I ever have.
I had to drive my butt to the ER at 3am on Wednesday morning with hopes that the doctor could give me some miracle drug to make me feel better by 6am so that I could be a productive mother....
There was no "miracle drug".
He seriously prescribed me 800mg motrin (which if you're in the military, it is laughable) and Tamiflu.
Thank God my husband didn't have any midterms on Wednesday, and played hooky from class to make sure I didn't die and take care of the kids.
My symptoms got worse, so I went back to a DIFFERENT ER this morning, and the doctor gave me steroids, and I'm feeling 10 folds better than I have all week.
I just need to kick this sickness so that I can enjoy my Spring Break!

Anyway, shout out to my hubs for holding the fort down while I've been sick.
I've tried my best to enjoy our time off together, but I've been a witch during the days.

On Thursday, I had to actually leave my house to pick up my daughter from school, so I managed to throw some mascara and eyeliner on, so I wouldn't scare the other moms with my "face of death".

My daughter's school had a "Dogs with Dads" night where they served hot dogs for dinner, and had all sorts of activities for the families to enjoy together.
Nick got out of his Naval Science lab just in time to make it to join us!

It's little things like this that make me so grateful to be at an assignment were Nick can be so present in Dannika's day to day life.

Friday was Dannika's annual "Spring Sing Along" at her school.
They had a western theme!
A perfect excuse to throw on her Ariat cowgirl boots!
(Well, we're in Texas...no one needs an excuse here to wear cowgirl boots).

Walking with a purpose!
Girls got places to be!!!!

I'm kinda obsessed with the ankle boot with cuffed skinny jean trend right now...

My baby's in her schools 100 book club!

Friday was a perfect day to fly kites!

The kids on our street sitting in the back of Nick's truck!
Spring break has begun!

Hope y'all have a great week!
We're hitting up the Florida Georgia Line concert at the Houston rodeo this week, and doing some fishing!

No, I Don't Want to Make Money From Home

I feel like we are in a fitness revolution.
Every time I log on to my Facebook or Instagram, my feed is bombarded with people's "gym selfies", work out motivation, crossfit photos, healthy food photos, marathon finish photos, shakes, and the list goes on.
It actually makes me smile knowing that more people are taking control of their health and fitness.
I'm not one of those people who get annoyed with people's constant fitness motivation and "fitspiration".
It's motivating, and if it can motivate ONE person to make one healthy lifestyle change in their life that day, then you did your job.

But can I tell you what really gets under my skin?
People who have absolutely no education and background in health and nutrition dishing out health and fitness advice like experts.
It also bothers me that multilevel marketing companies (not gonna name them, but you know 'em) can make someone instantly an "expert" by calling their independent sales consultants "coaches" and "nutrition experts".
It also bothers me when people buy into all this marketing.

"MAKE MONEY FROM HOME!"
"MAKE YOUR OWN HOURS!"
"JOIN MY TEAM!"
"GET FREE STUFF!"

Now, I'm just go ahead and say, I have lots of friends who do multilevel marketing that are making a pretty decent living for themselves.
I also like to buy certain products from them....like Scentsy and Younique mascara (just their mascara).
Other than that, I usually politely decline their offers to me to join their "teams" or I just start ignoring them.
I'm not trying to be rude, but I spent a good 3 years of my career as a Marine on recruiting duty.
I didn't sell mascara and candle melts.
I freaking sold the Marine Corps to young men and women up for the challenge and bettering themselves.
And it's a pretty dang stressful job.
I worked with a combat vet and purple heart recipient in my office, and he used to say all the time that recruiting was some days harder than combat, and that he'd rather get shot at again than be a recruiter again.
True. Story.

So as you can see, I am pretty much OVER "selling" anything.
I don't want to sell anything ever again for the rest of my life.

Well, I just went on a tangent there.
I guess my point is, I love that people have found their own way of losing weight and staying fit (that works for them).
But it doesn't mean it works for every one.
You'll never see me drinking an Advocare shake or drink, and you'll never see me doing some Chalene Johnson piyo video in my living room.
I have my own fitness routine and healthy eating habit that has worked for me for YEARS.
You're not going to change my mind on that, because it's been working for me.
I obviously never complain about losing weight on my own after having babies, nor have I ever complained about my fitness and my body....
It means I'm happy with what is working for me, and your shakes and drinks isn't what I'm looking for.

I love you friends, but please stop asking me to join your team to sell your stuff.
I admire you for doing what you gotta do to make money from home and make your own hours.
It's just not me.

Oh, and I'm going to see John Legend tonight!!!
whoop whoop!!

Cauli-fried rice

I've been on the "cauliflower train" for a while now.
I feel like I've liked cauliflower before it became "trendy".
Thanks to Pinterest, I've seen an explosion of recipes replacing carbs with cauliflower.
I think people get the misconception though that just because there are "no carbs" in a recipe, it makes it healthy.
For instance...
The "cauli-crust" pizza (so popular lately) in theory sounds pretty healthy, but then I see the amount of cheese you have to put into it to make it bind.
Not so healthy.
Sometimes, it's just better to stick with the original, in my humble non-expert opinion.
I don't believe in dieting.
I spent a better part of my twenties dieting, and frankly, dieting is not fun.
It sucks.
In those years of yo yo diets and fad diets, I did learn quite a bit about my body, and what makes me gain weight like a balloon.
So today, as a thirty year old mother of two, I make MOSTLY healthy choices when I eat.
One thing I know about my body (notice I said MY body...not yours), breads and pastas (whole wheat or white) makes me gain unnecessary weight.
That doesn't mean I don't eat them!
But I choose to eat them earlier in my day (breakfast & lunch), and try and avoid it for dinner.
And going out to eat is always an exception.....
Who can resist the free bread/tortilla chips they give you at restaurants!?

ANYWAY,
One of my favorite foods is fried rice.
It's delicious, but the main ingredient in that dish is...RICE! (DUN DUN DUN).
Instead of rice, I use cauliflower.
Nick took it to class, and the guys could not believe it wasn't rice!
It's absolutely delicious too!
I could eat it every day!

So I'm going to share my recipe with you!

Ingredients:
1 head of caulflower (chopped into florets)
2-3 Cups of frozen mixed vegetables
1/2 of an onion chopped
2 cloves of garlic (minced)
2tsps of ginger (minced)
2-3 tbsp sesame seed oil
soy sauce
1tbsp of full fat REAL butter (yes...butter in moderation isn't horrible for you!)

salt
pepper

Directions:
1. In a food processor, pulse 1/2 the cauliflower at a time. You don't want to pulse it for TOO long because your cauliflower gets mushy, and it's important to do it in two batches (otherwise you'll end up over processing it, and it'll look like mush instead of a "rice like" consistency).

2. Heat your sesame seed oil and butter in a wok (or a pan if you don't have a wok). Once the butter melts add your garlic, onion, and ginger and let it get fragrant (just about a minute or two).

3. Add the cauliflower and frozen veggies to the pan and let the cauliflower cook for a few minutes. Add your soy sauce, salt and pepper based on your preference. Remember soy sauce is pretty salty on its own, so you don't need a ton of salt!

4. If you don't like the taste of cauliflower, then let it cook longer, and let the flavors absorb into it. I personally like the taste of it, so I tend to pull it off the heat when it's still has a little bit of a "crunch" to it.

Super easy, and super delicious!
My kids love it, and my husband loves it, so it's a winning dish at my house!
Enjoy!

Skinny Cheeseburger Casserole

One of my favorite things to do is to take a fattening, hearty dish and make it healthy.
I like to scroll through recipes and figure out ways to make it healthier without losing its deliciousness.
I found an awesome recipe for cheeseburger casserole on foodnetwork.com (I believe it was Bobby Dean's recipe), but it was loaded with fat.
It used ground beef, rotini pasta noodles, butter, cheese....
I'm salivating thinking about all these delicious fatty ingredients, but like I always say...
Nothing tastes better than being healthy!
I replaced the pasta with sweet potato cubes (Nick and I don't eat refined carbs of any sort after lunch time), I replaced the ground beef with extra lean ground turkey, I replaced the canned tomatoes with fresh tomatoes, I replaced the butter with olive oil, and I used a cheddar cheese made with skim milk instead of full fat cheese.
I also halved the amount of cheese the original recipe called for.

I tweaked the recipe and made it healthier, and made it my own.

Ingredients (in absolutely no particular order):
1 1/3 lbs of extra lean ground turkey (I used Jennie O's extra lean)
3 medium sized sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed)
1/2 a head of chopped iceburg lettuce
1/2 of an onion (finely chopped)
3 roma tomatoes diced (save the juice!)
1 can of low sodium cream of mushroom soup (I prefer low sodium over fat free because frankly, we all need to cut down on salt, and fat free just means a lot of other crap is in it that we don't need in our bodies.)
4 cloves of garlic (finely minced) <---I'm a garlic addict...feel free to use less
salt
black pepper
2 tbsp tomato paste
2tbsp dijon mustard
1/2 cup of skim milk cheddar shredded cheese
1 cup of dill pickles (finely chopped)
chopped scallions for garnish

Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Take a 9x12 baking dish/casserole dish and spray with non stick spray (I use Pam olive oil).

2. Get a pot of water on the stove and bring to a boil. Once boiling, throw your sweet potatoes in just until they get tender. Don't let them overcook, or they'll be mushy and turn more into a mash in your casserole! Once they are done, drain them, and put them aside...they should not be mushy!

3. In a large skillet, heat your olive oil over medium-low heat, and add the onions. Cook until soft. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Stir in the ground turkey and cook until browned; season with salt and pepper (I just throw in a big pinch!). Stir in the tomato paste and cream of mushroom soup, then add the diced tomatoes and mustard. Let the mixture get bubbly and thicken (just a couple minutes).

4. Gently stir the sweet potatoes into the skillet with the ground turkey, and transfer it to your casserole dish. Top with shredded cheese and diced pickles. Put in the oven for about 20 minutes.

5. To serve, just spoon onto a plate and add iceberg lettuce on top!

My family loved it!
My husband took it to work as leftovers the next day, and couldn't stop talking about how good it was!

I'll try and start posting more recipes soon!
It's been so long since I have, and I have an arsenal of super delicious and healthy recipes that I cook daily for my family!

The New Years "Resolutioners"

As a long time "gym goer", I've always dreaded this time of year.
I've even taken the month of January off from the gym and stuck to at home work outs just to avoid it.
For my fellow "gym buffs", y'all know that this is when the "New Years resolutioners" hit the gym in full force causing crowding in gyms all across the nation.

Completely shameless "gym selfie".

My definition of a "New Years resolutioner"...
Someone who:
1) Doesn't normally work out regularly
2) Feels guilty about what they ate during the holidays (Thanksgiving until now)
3) Is normally a "gym goer", but stopped going over the holidays, and is trying to "get back on the train"

And lastly...

4) Made a New Years resolution to lose weight and get in shape this year (as they do EVERY year).
Their motto is always, "This is THE year! For real this time!"

To be honest, these people used to annoy me.
They used to annoy me to all hell!!!
I used to enjoy watching the gym become less and less packed as the month of January wore on.
It meant people were saying "screw it", and going back to their old ways.
Then I could finally have "my gym" back with all the "regulars" I was used to seeing.

As I've gotten older and "more mature" (not totally mature yet....lol), I've learned to be a little bit more patient and grew a little more compassion in my heart.

With the obesity rate in America at an all time high, and diseases like diabetes and heart disease being so rampant amongst us, I am all about a "healthier America".
After the New Year, I went to my gym at the same time I always do with a positive outlook.
I had the mentality that maybe I can motivate someone to continue coming for the rest of their life instead of quitting a month into it.

While statistically, the gym will start dying down once the end of the month comes, I hope that at least ONE person decides to change their lifestyle for a healthier, fitter life.

So instead of being annoyed at the crowds in the gym, and being annoyed that I had to wait for a machine...
I switched up my work out to accommodate the machines that WERE open,
Something as simple as changing your attitude and your outlook at the gym can make your January gym experience way more enjoyable.

Motivate someone...and take more gym selfies!

I like to take candid photos of my hot husband while he lifts/squats.

Another shameless gym selfie!

Organic Green Tea Matcha Powder

Note: I received a free sample of this product for review. I was not compensated monetarily. All of the opinions stated are mine.

I've seen on Instagram lately, a lot of people post smoothie recipes with "green tea matcha powder".
If you know me, I love a green smoothie packed with tons of veggies.
I've heard of matcha tea powder before, and I'm pretty sure I had a drink at Starbucks that contains it.
That's about as far as my knowledge on it went.
I did some Googling on it, and surprisingly found some pretty awesome health benefits of it.
Just a few:
*Increased energy
*Burns calories
*Detoxifies body
*Improves memory and concentration

So when I was asked by Kiss Me Organics to write a review on their organic green tea matcha powder, I jumped on the opportunity!
They are exclusive to Amazon, and being an Amazon Prime member, I received it within two days with free shipping!
One bag has 4ozs, and it's recommended that you have 1/2 tsp to 1tsp a day.
If you do the math, this little bag will last you 2-3 months (depending on how much you use)!

It says you can use it in lattes, smoothies, and baking.
I'm not much of a latte person at home, and I don't bake, so I decided to try it in a smoothie.

Here's my smoothie recipe.
The measurements are estimates, since I never measure anything.

2-3 cups of water (depending on how thick or runny you like your smoothies)
1 cup of frozen bananas
1/2 cup of frozen strawberries
1/2 cup of frozen cauliflower
handful of spinach
1/2 cup of greek yogurt
1/2 tsp of Kiss Me Organics matcha powder

When you open the bag, the smell is really intense and strong.
It's not an unpleasant smell (it's more like an earthy smell).
I got the impression that the taste and smell of the powder would overpower my smoothie.
But after blending it with all my other ingredients, you couldn't even tell it was in there.
The powder is extremely fine, so it can be blended into just about anything.
They also send you a FREE recipe guide with different ways to use it!

My smoothie was delicious!

It's a perfect "little something" to add to your everyday smoothie for a boost of added health benefits!

Losing Post Baby Weight

First, I just want to say that I am not a health or fitness expert, nor am I a personal trainer.
Everything I write about in regards to health or fitness is MY personal story.

I've shared with y'all my post pregnancy weight loss journey on my blog, and I love all the encouragement I've gotten about it.
I also love getting emails from women who have told me that I've motivated them.
It makes me feel happy, because in all honesty, the reason why I have documented my fitness journey and post pregnancy weight loss is for my own personal motivation.
When I let the whole world know about my goals, it holds me accountable.
But knowing that it's motivated others is really encouraging!
Health and fitness should be a big priority for everyone, in my humble opinion.
Healthy people are happy people....happy people attract other happy people....happy moms have happy kids....YOU GET IT.
With my 2nd pregnancy, I've lost the baby weight a LOT faster than I did with my first.
However, I feel like my weight loss journey has given some women really unrealistic timelines for getting their post baby body back.

I was watching Wendy Williams today, and she had an "Ask Wendy" segment with a doctor on weight loss.
A woman asked what a realistic timeline was for her to lose all her baby weight (she had a baby 4 months prior).
The doctor told her that realistically, it takes a year to a year and a half for a woman to lose her baby weight.
After hearing that, I wanted to blog about it.
I think women oftentimes forget that it took 9 months to gain all that weight, it's gonna take at least equal that time to lose it too!!!

With my first pregnancy, I gained 60lbs....I added 60lbs to my little 5'4 frame.
I was almost 190lbs when I was full term with Dannika.
I'm not gonna lie, I ate EVERYTHING I craved when I was pregnant with her.
We are talking In N Out, Mexican food, dessert....anything my little heart desired, I ate it.
After I gave birth, I figured the weight would just fall off.
I was SO wrong.
The weight just seemed to cling to my body for dear life.
This was 3 months after having Dannika.
These pictures do no justice to the amount of weight I was carrying, but at least you get a clear view of my legs, stomach, and butt.
Here's a photo of me on stage at Pacific Coast Church in San Clemente, CA for Dannika's baby dedication (Dannika was either 4 or 5 months old).
Look at my thighs.

It took me almost exactly a year to lose ALL the baby weight.
Nick deployed when Dannika was 6 months old, and when he came back, he came home to this...
This was 13 months after Dannika was born.
And I was bikini ready for our trip to the Dominican Republic a month after Nick got home from Afghanistan.
With Mattis, the weight has come off a lot faster.
The biggest reason is that I was a lot more careful with my weight gain during pregnancy with him.
I remembered how hard it was and how long it took to lose the weight after I had Dannika, so I held back on my cravings, ate healthy, and watched my weight.
Having to lose less weight was obviously way easier.

I've also been training my husband to get his run time down for OCS.
There isn't much that I'm better at than him (as far as physical fitness), but one thing is that I've always been a better runner than him.

I guess the biggest thing I want people to get out of this is that I'm not taking any sort of miracle drug or pill.

For some women it takes a year to get back to their pre baby body.
For some, it takes half that time.

It all depends on what work you put in, and most importantly, how your body responds!

I know my body and I know what my body responds to.
I don't take supplements because I'm breastfeeding.
I eat a lot of calories because I'm breastfeeding.
I make sure the calories I consume COUNT.
I work out 5 days a week with an active recovery day.
I switch my work outs up a lot for muscle confusion.
I lift weights.
I do cardio.
I have cheat days...a lot of cheat days.

This is what works for ME.

Find out what works for YOU, and stick with it.
Just keep in mind that that it took you 9 months to make a human inside of you, it took you 9 months to gain all that weight to sustain that human...
It might take you that long to lose what you gained to sustain that baby....

Patience...

Health, Fitness, & Social Media

I'm THAT person on social media.
I post my work outs, I take post run/pre run "selfies" and put on my instagram.
I post my RunKeeper results for everyone to see.
I've actually pulled back a little lately, because I realized all the photos kinda looked the same.
Someone told me I was vain and fishing for compliments...rude.
The reality is, when I post things like that on social media, it keeps me accountable.
It's nice to get encouragement from others, and it's also nice when people tell me that my "post run selfie" I put on Instagram motivated them to get out and go for a run that day.
I also enjoy looking at other people's fitness posts and photos of their pre/post workouts.
I'm one of THOSE people that will spend way too much time on Instagram looking at all the photos that people have hashtagged with #running, #fitness, #anythingthatisfitnessrelated.

And to all my beautiful friends who post their run times, mileage, PR's, Crossfit videos, etc. etc. etc....
KEEP IT UP, cause I LOVE looking at them!

I received two messages on Facebook this week in regards to my love affair with fitness.

"Why do you work out so much?"
-It feels good. It's a natural high, and the endorphins my body produces is the most amazing feeling in the world. Even when every muscle in my body hurts, and I can barely move from a work out, it's the best kind of pain. This is probably reason #1.

-Reason #2 would be I want to look hot for my husband.  I was fit when we got married, and I plan to stay that way for eternity. Everyone has their "type" and their "preference". Nick just so happens to have noticed my legs and abs when he first saw me outside of cammies, and I am convinced that he fell a little in love with me that day (even though it was only our first date).
Nick is the farthest thing from shallow, and I'm confident I could gain a 100lbs, and he'd still love me unconditionally.
But he stays looking good for me, so I return the favor :)
Besides...we are happiest as a couple when we feel good about ourselves.
This photo was taken just an hour prior to going to Nick's apartment for our first official date (which is why I have a SoCo and Dr. Pepper to calm my nerves).
This is what I wore with some pretty banging heels. :)
He talks about these white shorts and heels I wore to this day.

"You talk about running like I do a spa day."
A friend sent me this on facebook the other day and commented that I talk about running like she does a spa day. lol.
I chuckled.
-Running and working out ARE my spa days, and lucky me, I get to have a "spa day" EVERY day!
It destresses me.
It helps me decompress.
And bonus...I get fit in the process!

Living an active lifestyle and being healthy are some of our top priorities in the Romer house.
We could lose everything tomorrow, but at least I'll have my health, my running shoes, and an open road somewhere for my running shoes to pound.
I'm no fitness expert, nor do I have the perfect body.
I think the words "perfect body" are just ridiculous.
But I can tell you this...
My body is perfect for me...
This body's given birth to TWO beautiful children.
I've seen this body do things in the gym that I never thought I'd ever be able to do.
Take care of your body...
It's the only one you get.

Favorites Lately

I am a big believer in what you put in your mouth has a bigger impact on your weight loss than anything.
You can run 10 miles a day, but if you go home and eat cake and junk food all the time, you're not going to see results.
I love to snack.
I'm always craving a little something here and there all day long (no matter how big and satisfying my meals are).
I don't have much of a sweet tooth, and I don't like decadent desserts, chocolate, cake, etc.
It doesn't mean I don't crave sweets though!
But when I crave sweets, it's not something quite as indulgent as normal people crave.
Lately, I've been going through my "sweet tooth" phase.
What's my favorite healthy snack that satisfies my sweet tooth?
I love celery sticks and peanut butter.
I always buy all natural peanut butter, and I always check the ingredients to make sure that the only thing in it is roasted peanuts!
No added sugars, preservatives, oil, etc. etc. etc.
Then to make it a little sweet (since all natural peanut butter has no added sugar), I drizzle a little bit of honey into it.
I like doing it this way cause I can really control how much sweetness I'm putting into it.
It totally satisfies my sweet cravings!
I know most people are reading this thinking, "Really? That's your SWEET craving?!"
Seriously...for a girl who doesn't enjoy desserts, this is it!
I blame it on my Korean upbringing.
Koreans usually don't finish a meal with dessert, and after a nice meal, most Koreans eat fruit as their "dessert".
Most Korean restaurants you go to will give you orange slices or watermelon for dessert after a meal (and it's always complimentary)!

Another thing I don't drink is juice.
This goes back to the fact that I don't really like sweet things.
My unhealthy liquid that I can't live without is diet Dr. Pepper, and I only have that when I'm enjoying a cocktail (more on that another time).
But water does get pretty boring, so I like to spruce up my water.
Lately, I've been digging this...
I just fill up a large pitcher with water and drop slices of cucumber and apple into it.
It gives my water such a refreshing taste, and I seriously go through a 2L pitcher a day!
Sometimes, if I don't have apples, I'll either throw some lemon slices in there or squeeze a lemon directly into my water.
I tried apples and lemons once, and it was just too much acidity in the water.
I feel like I'm at the spa when I'm drinking it.

Another few "favorites"...

This knit beanie/mitten combo from Old Navy.

This adorable "monster" onesie from Gymboree.

This cute flat brimmed cap from H&M.
Channeling his inner Vanilla Ice....
Also, I am very aware that he clashes.
I was just trying his new hat on him....calm down folks.

And this adorable hat from H&M also.

I used to drive a fancy shmancy, overpriced German made vehicle when I lived in Cali (and had a job).
I traded it in for a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited when I moved out here to New England.
I am SO glad that I did!
The 4WD seriously gives me a little more confidence on the icy, slushy roads here.

And my last favorite of this post...
